Caravan Surgeon provides specialist caravan insurance repair assessments and bodywork repairs for owners across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and surrounding areas.
If your caravan has been damaged while towing, reversing, manoeuvring, parked in storage or exposed to severe weather, the first challenge is understanding what can realistically be repaired. Damage that looks extensive at first glance does not always mean that a complete panel or moulded section must be replaced.
Caravans are built from lightweight materials that require a specialist approach. Aluminium skin, GRP mouldings, plastic corner sections, decorative graphics, rails, seals and internal structures may all be involved in what initially appears to be a simple scrape or impact.
With more than 30 years of SMART repair and refinishing experience, Caravan Surgeon assesses each damaged area individually. Our aim is to identify whether a safe, durable and visually acceptable repair is possible, explain the available options clearly and provide an appropriate repair quotation where the work falls within our capabilities.
Send Us Photographs of Your Caravan Damage
Send clear photographs, your postcode, caravan make and model and a brief description of how the damage occurred. We will review the visible damage and explain the most appropriate next step.
Specialist Caravan Insurance Repairs
Caravan insurance work is not simply a larger version of car body repair. The materials are different, the panels are often much thinner and the structure behind the visible damage may be closely connected to internal furniture, insulation, seals or window openings.
A successful repair therefore begins with a proper assessment rather than an assumption that every dent, crack or scrape can be treated in the same way.
Before recommending a repair, we consider:
- the material from which the damaged section is made;
- the depth, size and position of the damage;
- whether the panel has been punctured, stretched or distorted;
- whether water ingress may be possible;
- whether internal supports or furniture may have moved;
- the condition of the surrounding material;
- the age and overall condition of the caravan;
- whether replacement parts remain available;
- the type of finish, texture, graphics and colour involved;
- whether the proposed repair would be proportionate and reliable.
Some damage can be repaired locally. Other damage may require component replacement, structural inspection or referral to a different specialist. We will not recommend a cosmetic repair where the underlying condition makes that approach unsuitable.
What Types of Caravan Insurance Damage Can We Assess?
We assess a broad range of cosmetic and bodywork-related caravan damage. Every enquiry is considered on its own merits, but common examples include the following.
Reversing and Manoeuvring Damage
Reversing incidents are among the most common causes of caravan body damage. A brief contact with a gatepost, wall, fence, bollard or campsite obstacle can affect a surprisingly large area because caravan body panels are lightweight and easily marked.
Typical reversing damage may involve:
- rear corner mouldings;
- lower skirts and bumper sections;
- rear light surrounds;
- side panel scrapes;
- deep abrasions and gouges;
- cracked GRP or plastic;
- distorted trim and rails;
- punctures through thin aluminium skin.
Where the damage is localised and the surrounding structure remains sound, repair may be possible without replacing the entire panel or corner section.
Towing Accident Damage
Caravans can sustain damage while being towed through narrow gateways, roads, service areas, storage compounds and campsites. Side scrapes and corner impacts often occur when the caravan tracks differently from the tow vehicle.
Towing-related damage should be assessed carefully because it may affect more than the visible outer surface. Where there is any concern about the chassis, running gear, hitch, road lights or structural integrity, the caravan may also need to be inspected by an appropriately qualified leisure-vehicle engineer.
Caravan Surgeon focuses primarily on the bodywork and cosmetic repair element of the damage.
Storage Compound Damage
Caravans can be damaged while parked in storage by neighbouring vehicles, moving equipment, falling branches, gates or accidental impacts. In some cases, the cause may not be immediately obvious because the owner discovers the damage when returning to collect the caravan.
Good photographs and a clear description of the storage conditions can help establish the location and extent of the visible damage. Where another party may be responsible, owners should keep all relevant records and notify the storage operator and insurer as soon as practical.
Storm and Falling-Object Damage
High winds and severe weather can cause branches, fencing, roof tiles, awnings and loose objects to strike a caravan. Damage may range from a single localised impact to widespread marks across several panels.
Some storm-related damage may be suitable for localised repair, while widespread hail damage, roof damage or water ingress may require a more extensive assessment.
Before cosmetic work begins, it is important to establish whether the incident has affected:
- roof joints;
- window and locker seals;
- awning rails;
- roof lights and vents;
- internal wall construction;
- moisture resistance;
- the structural bond between panel layers.
Tree and Branch Damage
Tree branches can create deep scratches, punctures, cracks and impact marks. Damage near a roof edge, awning rail or window opening deserves particular attention because those areas may be more vulnerable to water ingress.
A branch scrape that appears cosmetic may also have caught a rail or seal. The whole affected area should therefore be examined rather than treating only the most obvious mark.
Gatepost, Wall and Bollard Impacts
Contact with a gatepost or wall commonly damages a caravan corner before continuing along the side panel. This can create several different repair requirements within one incident, including cracked plastic, distorted trim, torn aluminium and paint or graphic damage.
The correct solution may involve a combination of repair methods rather than one single process.
Malicious Damage and Vandalism
Deliberate scratches, gouges, punctures and impact marks may also form part of an insurance claim. The repair method depends on the depth of the damage and the material affected.
Where vandalism has damaged several disconnected areas, each section should be photographed and listed separately so the insurer and repairer have a clear record of the full incident.
Cosmetic Impact Damage
Some accidents cause visible bodywork damage without affecting the caravan’s ability to be moved or used. Cosmetic damage can still reduce the caravan’s value and may worsen if cracks or broken surfaces are left exposed.
Repairing the damage promptly can help prevent contamination, moisture entry and further deterioration, particularly where the outer skin has been broken.
Common Caravan Components We Repair
GRP Front and Rear Panels
Many modern caravans use moulded GRP sections at the front and rear. GRP can sustain cracks, chips, holes and localised impact damage.
A suitable repair may involve:
- removing loose or fractured material;
- stabilising the damaged section;
- rebuilding strength from behind or within the repair area;
- restoring the original contour;
- refining the surface;
- colour matching and refinishing;
- polishing and final inspection.
The exact method depends on access, panel thickness, crack direction and the condition of the surrounding GRP.
Further information is available on our caravan and motorhome GRP and plastic crack repairs page.
Plastic Bumpers, Skirts and Corner Mouldings
Plastic caravan components often crack or split during relatively low-speed impacts. Complete replacement may be difficult where a part is discontinued or subject to a long lead time.
Some plastics can be repaired by carefully stabilising the crack, restoring the shape and refinishing the surface. However, not every plastic responds well to repair, and heavily distorted or brittle components may be better replaced.
Aluminium Side Panels
Caravan side panels may be smooth, textured or finished with decorative graphics. Repairing them can be more challenging than repairing conventional automotive steel because the aluminium skin is often extremely thin.
Possible damage includes:
- shallow and medium dents;
- deep creases;
- tears and punctures;
- scrapes through the outer finish;
- distortion around windows and lockers;
- damage extending across several texture lines.
A localised repair may be possible in selected cases. The achievable finish depends heavily on panel texture, damage depth and the accessibility of the area.
Locker Doors and Access Panels
Locker doors and service hatches may be damaged by impact, forced opening or contact with nearby obstacles. Damage can affect the door skin, frame, hinges, seals or surrounding body panel.
Before repair, the door should be checked for correct alignment and closure. A cosmetic repair alone is not sufficient if the component no longer seals properly.
Wheel Spats and Lower Skirts
Lower caravan components are vulnerable to kerbs, stones, posts and tyre-related damage. Cracks and scrapes may be repairable where the material remains stable and sufficient access is available.
Painted Panels and Mouldings
Painted caravan sections can often be refinished using professional repair and colour-matching techniques. The surrounding surface may have faded or weathered, so the original paint formula is only one part of the matching process.
Repair Rather Than Replace
One of the central principles behind specialist SMART repair is to repair the affected area rather than replacing a much larger component unnecessarily.
On a caravan, full panel replacement can be particularly disruptive. It may require the removal of:
- windows;
- internal furniture;
- awning rails;
- locker frames;
- corner mouldings;
- decorative graphics;
- seals and trim;
- electrical fittings;
- internal wall finishes.
Replacement may also introduce long parts delays, especially where the caravan is older or the relevant component has been discontinued.
A carefully selected localised repair can sometimes offer several advantages:
- less dismantling;
- shorter repair times;
- retention of original factory joints and seals;
- reduced waste;
- lower repair costs;
- less risk of disturbing unaffected areas;
- a more proportionate solution to local damage.
Repair is not always the correct answer. Where the panel has extensive structural damage, severe distortion or widespread failure, replacement may be the more responsible option.
Our role is to assess which approach makes sense for the individual caravan rather than starting with a predetermined solution.
Unsure Whether Your Caravan Can Be Repaired?
Send us several clear photographs of the damaged area. Include one image showing the full side or end of the caravan and several close-up photographs from different angles.
How the Caravan Insurance Repair Process Works
Step 1: Notify Your Insurer
If you intend to make an insurance claim, check your policy and notify your insurer within the required timescale. The insurer may ask for details of the incident, photographs, a claim form and a repair estimate.
Do not authorise permanent repair work until you understand the insurer’s requirements. Carrying out repairs before approval may affect how the claim is handled.
Step 2: Send Us the Damage Information
To begin an assessment, send:
- your name and contact details;
- the postcode where the caravan is located;
- the caravan make, model and approximate year;
- an explanation of how the damage happened;
- clear photographs from several angles;
- details of any cracking, distortion or water ingress;
- your claim reference if one has been issued;
- any relevant insurer instructions.
Step 3: Initial Photo Assessment
We review the visible damage to decide whether the repair appears to fall within our area of expertise.
A photo assessment can be extremely useful, but photographs have limitations. They may not show the full depth of a dent, hidden cracking, damage behind trim or movement within the internal wall structure.
For that reason, an initial opinion may need to be confirmed by a physical inspection.
Step 4: Inspection and Quotation
Where necessary, the caravan is inspected in more detail before a formal quotation is prepared.
A repair quotation may include:
- a description of the visible damage;
- the proposed repair method;
- the preparation and refinishing required;
- relevant parts and materials;
- estimated labour;
- known limitations or exclusions;
- the possibility of hidden damage;
- quotation validity and estimated timescale.
Detailed insurance estimates can require considerably more time than an ordinary retail quotation. Any inspection or estimate fee will be explained before the service is provided.
Step 5: Insurer Review
Your insurer may approve the quotation, request further information, appoint an engineer or ask for an alternative estimate.
We can answer reasonable technical questions about our proposed repair, but the insurer remains responsible for deciding:
- whether the claim is covered;
- whether the repair is authorised;
- what excess applies;
- whether an engineer must inspect the caravan;
- how payment will be made;
- whether additional conditions apply.
Step 6: Repair Authorisation and Booking
Once the repair has been approved and the practical arrangements agreed, the work can be scheduled.
The booking date may depend on:
- workshop availability;
- the scale of the repair;
- required parts or graphics;
- paint and material supply;
- insurer communication;
- customer travel plans;
- weather, if any part of the work is mobile.
Step 7: Repair Preparation
The affected area is cleaned, inspected and prepared. Components may need to be removed to provide proper access or protect nearby fittings.
During preparation, previously hidden damage may become visible. Where this materially changes the repair, the customer and insurer may need to approve a supplementary quotation before work continues.
Step 8: Structural and Cosmetic Repair
The repair method depends on the material involved. This may include GRP reconstruction, plastic repair, reshaping, filling, surface refinement, sealing, priming and paint refinishing.
Every stage needs to be compatible with the surrounding material. The goal is not simply to cover the damage but to restore the area using an appropriate repair system.
Step 9: Colour Matching and Refinishing
Caravan paint colours can change over time through sunlight, polishing, weathering and previous repairs. Even where a manufacturer’s paint code is available, the colour may need to be adjusted to suit the caravan as it appears today.
The area is refinished and blended as appropriate to achieve the closest practical match.
Step 10: Final Inspection
Once the repair has cured, the area is inspected for finish, shape, colour and general quality. Removed components are checked and the repair area is cleaned before collection.
Can I Choose Caravan Surgeon as My Repairer?
Insurance policies differ. Some insurers use their own approved repair networks, while others may consider a quotation from a repairer chosen by the policyholder.
Before committing to a repair, ask your insurer:
- whether you can nominate an independent repairer;
- whether an engineer must inspect the caravan;
- whether more than one quotation is required;
- whether using your own repairer changes the excess;
- whether payment is made directly to the repairer or to the policyholder;
- whether the insurer has specific guarantee requirements;
- whether VAT is included in the authorised amount;
- whether any betterment or contribution may apply.
Caravan Surgeon is an independent repair specialist. We do not describe ourselves as approved by a particular insurer unless the relevant insurer has explicitly confirmed that position.
What Happens if Hidden Damage Is Found?
Caravan construction can conceal damage behind outer panels, corner mouldings, internal furniture and trim. A crack may continue beyond the visible section, or an impact may have moved a support that cannot be seen in photographs.
If significant additional damage becomes apparent after preparation or dismantling, work may need to pause.
The new findings can then be documented and, where necessary, a supplementary quotation submitted to the insurer.
This protects the customer and avoids continuing with a repair that is no longer suitable.
When a Caravan Insurance Repair May Not Be Suitable
Caravan Surgeon specialises in selected bodywork, cosmetic, GRP, plastic and refinishing repairs. Some claims require a different type of specialist.
We may not be the appropriate repairer where the damage involves:
- major chassis distortion;
- axle, braking or running-gear damage;
- extensive water ingress or wall delamination;
- severe fire or flood damage;
- gas or electrical systems;
- major roof reconstruction;
- widespread hail damage across several panels;
- extensive structural rebuilding;
- safety-critical towing components;
- a repair requiring unavailable manufacturer-only equipment.
Where the work falls outside our capabilities, we will say so. Honest assessment is more valuable than attempting an unsuitable repair.
Will the Caravan Repair Be Invisible?
The aim is always to restore the affected area as closely as reasonably possible to its pre-damage appearance. The final result depends on several factors, including:
- the panel material;
- the original texture;
- the colour and level of fading;
- the depth and position of the damage;
- whether graphics cross the repair area;
- the age of the caravan;
- previous repairs;
- access to the damaged section.
Smooth painted GRP can often be refinished very effectively. Textured aluminium can be more challenging because factory textures differ and may be difficult to reproduce exactly.
We will explain any likely visual limitation before accepting the repair.
Caravan Paint Matching
Obtaining a close paint match is a technical part of the repair process. Caravan colours that appear white, cream or silver can contain subtle differences that become obvious once two surfaces are placed next to one another.
The original paint code can be useful, but it is not always enough. The current appearance of the caravan may have changed through:
- ultraviolet exposure;
- age;
- polishing;
- cleaning chemicals;
- storage conditions;
- previous local repairs;
- differences between GRP and painted plastic.
Colour may therefore need to be assessed against the surrounding surface and adjusted before the repair is refinished.
Mobile or Workshop Caravan Insurance Repairs?
Some small cosmetic repairs may be completed at the customer’s home, storage site or another suitable location. However, many insurance repairs are better suited to workshop conditions.
Workshop repair may be recommended where the job involves:
- larger areas of preparation;
- GRP reconstruction;
- plastic repair and reshaping;
- significant paint refinishing;
- extended curing times;
- component removal;
- multiple repair stages;
- poor weather or unsuitable access;
- a need to secure and protect the caravan overnight.

We do not claim that every damaged panel can or should be repaired. If the damage requires replacement, structural work or another specialist, we will explain that clearly.
Realistic Expectations
Customers are told about any known limitations involving texture, paint match, graphics or accessibility before the repair begins.
Clear Insurance Communication
We aim to provide straightforward repair information and quotations that help customers understand the proposed work.
Local East Midlands Service
Our service is focused on areas where repairs can be properly assessed and fulfilled, rather than presenting Caravan Surgeon as a national operator without practical local coverage.
Caravan Insurance Repair Frequently Asked Questions
Do you carry out caravan insurance repairs?
Yes. We assess and complete suitable caravan bodywork, GRP, plastic and cosmetic repairs connected with insurance claims.
Can you provide a caravan insurance estimate from photographs?
Sometimes. Clear photographs may allow an initial opinion or provisional estimate, but more complex damage usually requires physical inspection.
Do you charge for insurance quotations?
A simple initial photo review may be possible without charge. Detailed inspections, written estimates or technical reports may involve a fee. Any charge will be confirmed before the service is provided.
Can you repair a cracked caravan front panel?
Many localised GRP cracks can be repaired, subject to the condition of the surrounding material and access to the damaged area.
Can a caravan side-panel puncture be repaired?
Selected punctures and tears may be repairable, but the panel texture, damage size and internal condition all affect what can be achieved.
Can you repair textured aluminium?
Some textured-panel damage can be repaired or improved. Exact reproduction of the original factory texture is not always possible, so expectations must be discussed before work begins.
Will my insurer let me choose Caravan Surgeon?
This depends on your insurance policy and the insurer’s claims process. Ask the insurer whether you may nominate an independent repairer before authorising work.
Are you approved by all caravan insurers?
No repairer should claim universal insurer approval. Caravan Surgeon is an independent repair business and works with suitable claims where the insurer agrees to the proposed arrangement.
How long does a caravan insurance repair take?
Timescales depend on the repair size, insurer approval, materials, parts availability and workshop schedule. A local repair may take considerably less time than a major panel replacement, but every job is different.
Can my caravan remain at its storage site?
Some assessments and small repairs may be possible at a storage site if access, permission, power, safety and weather conditions are suitable. Larger repairs normally require workshop facilities.
What photographs should I send?
Send one photograph of the complete caravan, one wider image showing the damaged area and several close-ups from different angles. Include any internal damage and nearby rails, windows or fittings.
Should I repair the damage before contacting my insurer?
Normally, you should notify the insurer and obtain any required approval before permanent repairs begin. Emergency temporary work may be appropriate where necessary to prevent further damage, but keep photographs and receipts.
What if the caravan is not safe to tow?
Do not tow the caravan if there is concern about its chassis, wheels, tyres, brakes, hitch, lights or structural condition. Arrange suitable recovery or obtain specialist technical advice.
Can you repair damage that is not covered by insurance?
Yes. The same repair may be completed privately where the customer decides not to claim or the damage falls below the policy excess, subject to assessment and agreement.
Will you deal directly with my insurer?
We may be able to provide repair information and respond to reasonable technical questions. The exact communication and payment arrangements vary between insurers and claims.
